Marquis Goodwin |
Marquise Goodwin was the most decorated track and field athlete in the history of Texas as a junior and again as a senior at the 2009 state track and field meet. Goodwin’s long jump win of 26’ 04 ¾” broke his own record from 2008. He also won the triple jump with a winning distance of 50’ 05 ¾”, nearly two feet beyond the second place mark.
He won a third gold medal running the second leg of Rowlett’s 4 x 100 relay, and won a silver medal in the 100 meter race with a 10.24 time and a final silver medal in the 200 meter race. He had a similar record in 2008, although his fifth medal was a bronze place in the 4 x 200 relay.
In 2008 he was the Junior World Long Jump Champion and also set a Nike indoor record in that event. In 2009 at the Pan American Junior National and USA National Event he won the long jump at 26’ 1 ½” with one legal jump and also came in 5th in the Senior Competition. In 2009 he also was World Junior Long Jump Champion by setting a new high school record of 26’10”.
In the summer of 2009, Marquis was invited to Trinidad, Spain to compete on the U-S-A Team at the Pan American Junior Olympics. He participated in the 4 x 100 relay and the long jump. This is also the second consecutive year Marquise has won the Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
Marquis plans to attend the University of Texas and major in Architectural Graphics or Kinesiology.
He is the son of Tamina Goodwin, and grandson Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Williams and the late Ira Joe Goodwin. He has three sisters, Deja, Brye, and Shay.
