~ Gale Field Awards ~
The Gale Fields Award recognizes outstanding
Senior High School Athletes graduating from
the Garland Independent School District.
This award is jointly presented by the
Garland Sports Hall of Fame and The Garland
News, and is presented each year at the
beginning of the Induction Banquet. Prior to
1996, one male and one female athlete from
each Garland H.S. was selected, but
beginning in 1996, this award was limited to
one male and one female from all Garland
High Schools combined. Aside from the
student’s athletic accomplishments in their
area of sports, additional criteria for
selection as an outstanding athlete are good
academic standing and good citizenship. The
youths in this country are the future
achievers in sports as well as leaders of
their communities. The GSHF hopes that in
some small way this award helps to support
the continued growth of sports and sports
participation in the City of Garland.
The Garland Sports Hall of Fame has selected
two outstanding graduating seniors to
receive the 2008 Gale Fields Award. Nick
Florence of South Garland High School and
Tomi Garrison of Garland High School are
this year’s deserving athletes. The two
graduating athletes were presented their
awards, which included a scholarship award
of $1,000, at the Awards Day programs at
their respective high schools. Aside from
the athletic accomplishments of these
students, the award committee looks at other
criteria such as academic standing and
citizenship.
