The 1949 Garland High School football team posted a record of 11 wins, two losses, and three ties. The Owls advanced by having greater penetrations than their opponents in the three ties.
Jerry Sellers was the Garland head coach, assisted by George Roach and Homer Johnson.
In an era of two-way play, the Owl starting line-up initially were: Ends Franklin Davis and Thomas Browning; Tackles were J.T. Garrison and Carl Brawley; Guards were Bobby Wynn and Bobby Melton; Center was Dale Turner; Quarterback was Raymond Wright; Halfbacks were Pascual Valle and Lloyd Compton; and Fullback was Billy Ray McIntire. Beginning with the Terrell game, Tommy Turner joined Davis at the end positions.

The Garland Owls won all of their district games but lost a non-district game to Hanley.
Against Irving, Garland’s toughest foe at that time, the Owls were held to a 7 to 7 tie before a record crowd of 7,200. Garland held a wide statistical margin over the Tigers, but its only score came on a pass from Page to Valle.

In view of Garland and Irving tying for the district championship, the district executive committee held two sessions and selected the Owls to enter the state playoffs on the basis of the Owls’ statistical edge in the tie game between the two. Garland had six penetrations to one for the Tigers. In first downs, the Owls lead 10 to six.

Facing Arlington in the bi-district game, Compton scored on a dazzling 40-yard broken field run early in the contest. But, shortly before halftime the Colts tied the score, 6 to 6. Again, the Owls continued their advance toward Region because of their 4 to 3 edge in penetrations over Arlington.

Meeting Bowie for the regional championship, Garland prevailed, 7 to 0, on the legs of Wright, who made runs of 19, 24, and 2 yards, and one run that was one foot for the score.
In the quarterfinals against Mineola, Valle scored for the Owls on a drive highlighted by his 44-yard carry of a screen pass from Page. The final score was 7 to 7. Again . . . . Garland advanced to the semifinals by an edge in penetrations, 4 to one.

In the state semifinals against Littlefield, the eventual state champion, the Owls finally succumbed, 27 to 13. The first Garland score came on a 54-yard run by Valle. The second Owl touchdown was a 13-yard pass to Davis from Page. James Newberry drop kicked the extra point.

At the end of the season, the Owls received high recognition. Valle, Wynn, and Brawley made both of the All-District first team selections. Garrison made first team on one selection and second team on the other selection. Wright made second team on both selections. McIntire made a second team selection and received honorable mention on the other selection. Turner received honorable mention on one selection. Valle was awarded a third team position on the All-State team, the first Owl to receive all-state recognition. Garrison, Valle, and Wynn were elected the tri-captains for the 1949 team.

2006 Garland High School Semi-Finalist Football Team

As Garland High entered its 101st season of football in 2006, it was favored to advance deep into the state playoffs. Coach Jeff Jordan had 40 lettermen available, 12 of whom were returning starters.

Coaching assistants were Danny Russell, Jayson Lavender, Nathan Richburg, Mike Morgan, Gino Tamez, Darrin Sharp, Jeff Middleton, Anthony Cheeks, Joe Hubbard, Shawn Lewis, Keith McKethan, Sean Lorance, and Brian Rigney.

In District play, except for Rockwall, Garland won all their games. In the bi-district game, the Owls defeated Plano West, 23-21, when the Wolves failed to make a first down as the game approached its end.

Longview lost to Garland, 24-21, for the Area Championship, again on a Bjelica kick as Brian Johnson blocked a field goal attempt in the last minute. In the regional semi-finals, Garland faced the Leander Lions. The Owls held a 27-24 edge after stopping the Lions’ final drive with 52 seconds left in the game. On a long road trip to the Houston suburb of Cypress-Fairbanks, Garland faced the Klein-Oak Panthers for the Region II title. In this game, the Owls won their most decisive playoff victory, 31-14.

Facing undefeated Cedar Hill in a semi-final contest, Garland initially held a 14 to zero lead. But, the Longhorns came back before half-time, 21-14. Then the Owls tie the score at 24-24. Cedar Hill’s quarterback, William Cole, broke loose on a 77-yard run to put the Longhorns ahead 31-24. With 3 minutes and 26 seconds left in the game, the Owls drove from their own 38 yard line to the Cedar Hill one yard line. Three carries by Hamilton and Hunter ended at 6 inches from the end zone, and . . . a Cedar Hill win. The next week, Cedar Hill demolished Houston Cypress Falls, 51-17 for the state championship.

Hamilton finished the year with 1,052 yards rushing on 170 carries and nine touchdowns.
Hunter set new passing standards with 150 completions on 243 passing attempts for 1,979 yards and 17 touchdowns. He had only 8 interceptions despite the large number of attempts.
Williams led in receiving with 26 catches and 3 touchdowns and 517 yards. Williams was selected first team defensive back on the 5A All State Team.

Frazier received honorable mention. Williams and Frazier also made the All Area first team.
The District 10-5A All District squad included: running backs Hamilton and Caldwell, tight end Bushnell, wide receiver Williams, offensive linemen Greider, Perches, Frazier, and Aghayere, linebackers Uvalle and Miville, and defensive backs Williams and Caldwell.

All District honorable mention included: quarterback Hunter, tight end Brandon Davis, offensive lineman Zach Redding, defensive lineman Casey Walker, linebacker Lavar Hart and defensive back Jarrett Ben. Frazier was honored as the district defensive Player of the Year.
