Chuck Curtis

Chuck Curtis coached the Garland High School football team to Texas Class AAAA State championships in 1963 and 1964. His coaching feats at Garland, together with his guiding Jacksboro to the Class AA State championship in 1962, made him one of the very few Texas coaches to have won three State titles. Chuck's 1963 Owls won 13 games, with only a non-district tie to blemish their record, and defeat Corpus Christi Miller for the State championship. No longer having any element of surprise to its advantage, the 1964 Garland team fought to another 13 victories, suffering only a single setback in district play, and defeated Galena Park for a second consecutive State title. Chuck's two seasons at Garland resulted in 26 wins, a tie, and a single loss for a remarkable winning percentage of 94.6%, as the Owls won their two State championships. Chuck's high school success resulted in his moving to the Southern Methodist University coaching staff as offensive coordinator in 1965. He later was the head football coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, until the university administration terminated the football program for budgetary reasons. During his playing days, Chuck earned consensus first-team All-Southwest Conference recognition in 1955 as the junior quarterback of the conference champion Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. As a senior, he quarterbacked the Horned Frogs to a second consecutive Cotton Bowl berth and a 28 to 27 victory over Syracuse, led by powerful running back, Jim Brown. Chuck later played for the professional New York Giants of the NFL, before entering the coaching ranks.
